Hotel Food Photography for Evelyn's Nashville

October 10, 2025 by Nick Bumgardner

Evelyns Hutton Hotel Food and Beverage Program

Since 2016 I have wanted to photograph the food and beverage program for a hotel. I had put out a ton of bids, but it just never happened. So when Evelyn’s at the Hutton Hotel reached out to me early this year I was stoked to say the least, but also had a nagging feeling it might not happen. This time was different. My friend Carly who I had previously worked with at another restaurant was the new GM. Since we had worked together before it made the process simple. The hotel industry is difficult to break into. I am thankful for this opportunity and I think we came up with some excellent imagery. This meant that I was going to bring the A team with me.

Evelyns needed a few photos for their updated menu featuring some seasonal items. They had a rock start chef and they also wanted to add a food stylist to the shoot to make sure the presentation of each dish was top notch. In fine dining it is essential to not just plate the dish, but ensure that it meets the chef’s vision. We enlisted Callie Blount as our food stylist. Callie is the perfect fit because of her willingness to work hard and to learn. Not to mention her amazing food styling skills and her eye for details.

For this shoot we wanted to use the space and also have a bit moodier lighting. So we had a Daniel Williams as the photo assistant on set to help out with lighting and moving gear. We used a large light, on a rolling stand to make set changes efficient.

For hotel industry photography I want to make sure that we capture the right vibe. We don’t just need amazing looking food we need a sense of place. I wanted to make sure we know that this amazing food was also in a really great environment. From a photographic standpoint that meant photographing the scene from a bit further away and using a bit of a wider lens. This lens choice gave us a more natural view of the food and the restaurant. It helped to capture the sense of place that we were looking for.

Since this was an active restaurant space we needed to keep a light foot print, and also move relatively quickly. We did a half day shoot starting just after the breakfast rush and finished just before the true lunch rush. Having a food stylist helps us move faster for this type of shoot. The chef can plate each dish, but allow the food stylist to add the elements of the dish that will fall with gravity and time. The food stylist adds things like the micro greens, sauces, and stacks things that will fall down over time. This allows the chef to be in the kitchen and come back to help when needed.

One of the most common questions I get is how many dishes can we capture in a half day or a full day. In this instance we were able to capture 11 unique dishes. We did this in 4 unique settings. We had a total of 40 unique deliverable final images and we took close to 400 images during the shoot.

I was so glad that we had a successful shoot for Evelyn’s. We brought a great team and came away with some excellent photos for marketing and advertising the restaurant. I walked away more confident than I went into the shoot. My team and I proved that not only can we photograph fine dining for the hospitality industry we can do it well and with a high degree of excellence. If you have a hotel food and beverage program that is in need of fresh content please reach out.

Simple Chocolate Cake

March 24, 2020 by Nick Bumgardner in Advertising Photography

Some days you just need a chocolate cake with Swiss buttercream icing. I just wanted to let everyone know that with COVID19 my family and I are hunkering down at home. This cake was shot in my home studio. This does not mean that we can’t shoot through. Whether it is food or product I can still accommodate your shoot.

Urban Sprout Micro Green Food and Product Photography

January 14, 2020 by Nick Bumgardner in Advertising Photography

Urban Sprout

Like most shoots this one begins with a story. About two years ago my family and I went to the farmers market in downtown Murfreesboro, TN. I decided to take my DJI Osmo along with me this particular Saturday. I thought I could get some cool video footage to put together for my instagram story my intention was to do a story around purchasing a tomahawk ribeye from one of my friends who owns a local farm and then tossing it on the smoker. While at the farmers market we ran into one of the newer vendors and struck up a conversation. This vendor happened to be selling micro greens. For those not in the know micro greens are essentially baby greens they have very intense flavors that are really amazing. One thing led to another and a few months later we were in the studio shooting.

The Request

One of my most common requests is to photograph content that bridges the gap between food photography and product photography. In this case, a local Micro Green grower reached out to me to create a catalog of images that they could use on social media and on their website. The company needed to show off their products both as a living and growing plant in a lifestyle setting and also more traditional photos of each individual micro green packaged for sale. Both types of imagery are vital to this client.

The Work

For this particular client, I have broken your work down into three sections. Simple packaged product imagery in a lifestyle environment, images of the greens in a lifestyle environment and finally true lifestyle images. For this client, we decided to use natural light coming through the studios south-facing windows. The south light would give us consistent light throughout the day. We opted for natural light because the client wanted to give a stronger sense of nature in the photos.

Packaged Shots

For the packaged shots the client received a gallery of images of each micro green on a solid white backdrop, own a white planked surface and also Ono a white planted surface with some minimal props.

Lifestyle Hero Shots

For this next batch of images we wanted to get to know the micro greens a bit better. These shots are closer in showing more detail and texture and shot from table height for the most part.

Wrapping It Up

Working with the micro greens was a really fun project. I got to try several varieties that I had never had before and even took home a tray of the popcorn greens and the reddish greens. We were able to spend a full day in the studio and build a great content library for the client to use..

Fin Fusion for Murfreesboro Magazine

May 16, 2017 by Nick Bumgardner in Food Photography

Last month I got the opportunity to photograph some delicious ethnic eats at Fin Fusion in Murfreesboro for Murfreesboro Magazine. I love the challenge of shooting food for editorials. The biggest challenge is that you never know what you are going to get, or how awesome the location may or may not be. The other big challenge is to not eat all of the food... It is an awesome challenge. Keep scrolling to see more asian food photography.

April 12, 2017 by Nick Bumgardner in Food Photography

Last month I got the privilege to photograph the In Season: Wagyu article for Nashville Lifestyles magazine. We shot this piece on location at Virago Nashville with chef Andrew Whitney. I had a great time learning more about the local food scene with one of the best chefs in town. Take a look at the pictures below!
