It’s Dirty Work, But Someone Has To Do It

Recently a new startup company in the pet goods space reached out to me with a project. They had just launched a line of Dog Potty Pads and they were looking for some e-commerce and lifestyle images. The client's request was simple. They needed their packaging and the product shot from a few different angles and put on a white background for e-commerce use. They then wanted two lifestyle photos of the product in use. Keep reading to see the photos!

The Process

The process for this shoot was pretty simple. We started with a client phone call where we discussed client needs and timeline. We then created a shot list over the phone so that we could all be on the same page. A few days later we met up and I received the products from the client. I was able to work independently from the client on this shoot. I communicated throughout the process with the client so that we were all on the same page. Once the products were photographed, I sent a web preview gallery to the client. Once images were approved they were retouched and the final files were delivered. Upon image delivery, I returned the products to the client.

The Images

For this client, we kept the images simple. We wanted to show off the box with as few angles as possible, but yet enough to tell the story of the product. The brand has a really fun and quirky image. The bright colors of the products really help them to stand out in the market place. The boxes were delivered in pretty bad shape. When the boxes arrived at customs coming into the US they ripped the boxes apart. Through the magic of retouching, I was able to rebuild the boxes.

Wrapping It Up

This was a really fun shoot. The product is super fun because of the high energy branding. The bright colors make the images pop off the screen. This company is one of many of a new breed of companies who are creating really compelling branding to sell products that are not traditionally considered brand worthy. I was able to crate a small library of assets for this client to compete in the e-commerce market place.

The Client Brief

The brand agency for Verve RX reached out to me at the end of 2018 with a request for fresh e-commerce images. The client had a short list of needs. The client needed 12 images and had some pretty specific design comps that the images needed to fit into. They wanted super clean images with nice crisp edges. We were able to execute on this job remotely without the client on set. We had a quick turn around time on these images of just a few days.

Wrapping It Up

We were able to execute on the client request and create some really crisp and clear images of the product packaging and a few accessories. We delivered all 12 product images in a tight deadline for the client to get up on their website.

Urban Sprout Micro Green Food and Product Photography

Like most shoots this one begins with a story. About two years ago my family and I went to the farmers market in downtown Murfreesboro, TN. I decided to take my DJI Osmo along with me this particular Saturday. I thought I could get some cool video footage to put together for my instagram story my intention was to do a story around purchasing a tomahawk ribeye from one of my friends who owns a local farm and then tossing it on the smoker. While at the farmers market we ran into one of the newer vendors and struck up a conversation. This vendor happened to be selling micro greens. For those not in the know micro greens are essentially baby greens they have very intense flavors that are really amazing. One thing led to another and a few months later we were in the studio shooting.

The Request

One of my most common requests is to photograph content that bridges the gap between food photography and product photography. In this case, a local Micro Green grower reached out to me to create a catalog of images that they could use on social media and on their website. The company needed to show off their products both as a living and growing plant in a lifestyle setting and also more traditional photos of each individual micro green packaged for sale. Both types of imagery are vital to this client.

The Work

For this particular client, I have broken your work down into three sections. Simple packaged product imagery in a lifestyle environment, images of the greens in a lifestyle environment and finally true lifestyle images. For this client, we decided to use natural light coming through the studios south-facing windows. The south light would give us consistent light throughout the day. We opted for natural light because the client wanted to give a stronger sense of nature in the photos.

Packaged Shots

For the packaged shots the client received a gallery of images of each micro green on a solid white backdrop, own a white planked surface and also Ono a white planted surface with some minimal props.

Wrapping It Up

Working with the micro greens was a really fun project. I got to try several varieties that I had never had before and even took home a tray of the popcorn greens and the reddish greens. We were able to spend a full day in the studio and build a great content library for the client to use..
